If you ever have to work on a dead/dying computer that won't boot up properly, this free tool is a LIFESAVER! Don't leave home without it.

Ultimate Boot CD for Windows
Awesome boot CD tool for use specifically with Windows XP. You must make your own disc and you must already own a full copy of Windows XP with SP1 (at least) on it.
Web Browser and Email

Firefox
Firefox is pretty awesome once you get used to it. There are a world of add-ons and themes available that you can use to get this browser to look and feel exactly how you want it to. It's free too!

Thunderbird is a great alternative to Outlook Express and compliments Firefox wonderfully. It's simple to use and it's free too!

Avast! Home Edition is a free anti-virus program. You do have to register, and they send you a number to register your copy as free for a year.

This is a great free malware removal tool.

TrendMicro's HijackThis is a handy tool to determine what has been changed by spyware or malware. Do not use this tool unless you are comfortable with doing so, it's somewhat advanced.
HOSTS file

HostsXpert from funkytoad.com is a great free HOSTS file manager. With this tool, you can view your HOSTS file, edit it, set it as read only, or reset it back to default.

MVPS HOSTS file
This is a regularly updated HOSTS file that blocks ads, banners, bad cookies, bugs, and some hijackers once you install it and reboot. A great tool!

Zone Labs sells many different versions of ZoneAlarm, some that get rid of cookies, some that are anti-virus. The free version is just a simple firewall. Look around the site for it, it's great!

OK, so mIRC isn't exactly FREE, but it's still really awesome for keeping in touch with friends via IRC. You can try it for 30 days, after which it's $20 with free updates from now on.

Crap Cleaner (CCleaner for short) is awesome. It can clean your cache, cookies, histories, etc, as well as fix registry problems! Try it out, it's freeware!

I highly recommend the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack! It has nearly every codec you could ever use, plus it has a QuickTime Alternative codec as well as a Real Alternative codec. Play QuickTime and Real media in your chosen media player for free!!

Atomic Clock Synch
My software firewall (ZoneAlarm free version) won't let me configure so that Windows XP can auto-sync the clock in the system tray with an atomic clock somewhere. However, I can tell my firewall to let this program have access to the net to synch my clock. It's free, and will synch your clock daily.

Twilight Utilities Window Manager
This is a great tool if you want to keep a program running but need the extra space at the bottom of your screen. Great for those programs that you want to keep running but won't minimize to the tray.

This is a WONDERFUL NES/Famicom Emulator written in C++. I don't think it gets nearly as much credit as it should. It is wonderfully written and has never failed on me yet to this day. Give this guy some support.
