There are many terrific free software applications out there that I use all the time. Here's a list of them.

Boot CDs

• Ultimate Boot CD
  If you ever have to work on a dead/dying computer that won't boot up properly, this free tool is a LIFESAVER! Don't leave home without it.
• Ultimate Boot CD for Windows
  Awesome boot CD tool for use specifically with Windows XP. You must make your own disc and you must already own a full copy of Windows XP with SP1 (at least) on it.

Web Browser and Email

• Firefox
  Firefox is pretty awesome once you get used to it. There are a world of add-ons and themes available that you can use to get this browser to look and feel exactly how you want it to. It's free too!
• Thunderbird
  Thunderbird is a great alternative to Outlook Express and compliments Firefox wonderfully. It's simple to use and it's free too!

Anti-Virus

• Avast! Home Edition
  Avast! Home Edition is a free anti-virus program. You do have to register, and they send you a number to register your copy as free for a year.
• AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition
  AVG Free Edition is my new favorite. I use it on my laptop and it works great.
• Avast! Virus Cleaner
  This is a free virus and worm removal tool.
• McAfee Avert Stinger
  This is another great free virus removal tool.
• Dr. Web CureIt!
  Dr. Web is an online virus scanner that is pretty effective.
• Virus Total
  You can upload a suspicious file to this website to find out if it is infected with anything.

Spyware removal

• AndyManchesta.com
  A great website with links to several tools.
• Lavasoft's Ad-aware Standard Edition
  Download Ad-aware Standard Edition to get rid of spyware and adware. Free program and free updates.
• Spybot - Seach and Destroy
  Get this free spyware removal tool as well, and use it along with Ad-aware. It has free updates as well.
• Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
  This is a great free malware removal tool.
• SUPERAntiSpyware
  SUPERAntiSpyware is a pretty good free spyware removal tool, but it's my least favorite of the tools listed here.
• HijackThis
  TrendMicro's HijackThis is a handy tool to determine what has been changed by spyware or malware. Do not use this tool unless you are comfortable with doing so, it's somewhat advanced.

HOSTS file

• funkytoad.com HostsXpert
  HostsXpert from funkytoad.com is a great free HOSTS file manager. With this tool, you can view your HOSTS file, edit it, set it as read only, or reset it back to default.
• MVPS HOSTS file
  This is a regularly updated HOSTS file that blocks ads, banners, bad cookies, bugs, and some hijackers once you install it and reboot. A great tool!

CD/DVD Burning

• ImgBurn
  ImgBurn can be used to burn most any kind of CD or DVD that you can think of, for free.
• DVD Decrypter
  DVD Decrypter is no longer updated, but can still come in handy.

Firewall

• PC Tools Firewall Plus
  This is a great free firewall tool that I like personally a little more than ZoneAlarm.
• ZoneAlarm Free Version
  Zone Labs sells many different versions of ZoneAlarm, some that get rid of cookies, some that are anti-virus. The free version is just a simple firewall. Look around the site for it, it's great!

FTP Client software

• FileZilla
  FileZilla is a great free FTP client.

Newsgroup apps

• Grabit
  Grabit is a great free newsgroup downloading program. Works wonderfully.
  • PowerPost-A&A
    You might want to use PowerPost-A&A along with Grabit.

Communication/chat software

• Trillian Basic
  Download Trillian Basic version if you use multiple chat programs. Trillian can handle AOL IM, Y! IM, ICQ, MSN Messenger, and IRC all at once, and it's free!
• mIRC
  OK, so mIRC isn't exactly FREE, but it's still really awesome for keeping in touch with friends via IRC. You can try it for 30 days, after which it's $20 with free updates from now on.

Cache/cookie cleaner

• CCleaner
  Crap Cleaner (CCleaner for short) is awesome. It can clean your cache, cookies, histories, etc, as well as fix registry problems! Try it out, it's freeware!

Media codecs

• K-Lite Codec Packs
  I highly recommend the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack! It has nearly every codec you could ever use, plus it has a QuickTime Alternative codec as well as a Real Alternative codec. Play QuickTime and Real media in your chosen media player for free!!

Disk Defragmenter

• MyDefrag
  MyDefrag (previously known as "JKDefrag") is an awesome free disk defragmenter and optimizer tool.

Miscellaneous

• Foxit Reader
  Foxit Reader is a free .pdf viewer that has much less bloat than Adobe's free version.
• 7-zip
  7-zip can pack and unpack many file types, including .zip and .rar for free.
• Allway Sync
  This is a great free sync tool. Perfect for syncing backups onto a USB flash drive.
• DOSBox
  DOSBox is an opensource DOS emulator that enables you to run old DOS programs with ease.
• Windows 98 & 98SE universal flash disk drivers
  You can download drivers that will make any USB powered flash drive work in Windows 98 or Windows 98SE - there are two different versions, free.
• tcp/IQ Dictionary
  Wonderful tray tool that provides quick access to a dictionary and thesaurus.
• Atomic Clock Synch
  My software firewall (ZoneAlarm free version) won't let me configure so that Windows XP can auto-sync the clock in the system tray with an atomic clock somewhere. However, I can tell my firewall to let this program have access to the net to synch my clock. It's free, and will synch your clock daily.
• Twilight Utilities Window Manager
  This is a great tool if you want to keep a program running but need the extra space at the bottom of your screen. Great for those programs that you want to keep running but won't minimize to the tray.
• Cheat Engine
  Make your own trainer or hack many of your favorite games.

• Nestopia NES Emulator
  This is a WONDERFUL NES/Famicom Emulator written in C++. I don't think it gets nearly as much credit as it should. It is wonderfully written and has never failed on me yet to this day. Give this guy some support.
• Mighty Mo's World
  Mighty Mo does indeed have an entire world of NES stuff on his website. Lots to look at. He also has an awesome Game Genie pack that you can download and import into Nestopia!
• Nintendo Player
  Nice website for the NES player.
• Zophar's Domain
  Zophar's Domain is a great resource for anyone who wants to keep up with old NES stuff.
  Also on Zophar's Domain you can find .nsf (Nintendo Sound Files) to download.
  All that is needed to play .nsf files is WinAmp and the NEZPlug plugin.
• NES WORLD
  This website is "dedicated to Nintendo Entertainment System fans & collectors. Lots to read there.
• The Warp Zone
  The Warp Zone has some great reading for the NES.

  NES Central has a ton of information for every game released for the NES. Lots of history there!

  This guy is selling ORIGINAL NES controllers that have been converted to USB, how cool is that? I ordered one of his USB NES controllers, and it works flawlessly. He also sells USB retrofitted SNES, Atari/Commodore, Genesis/Megadrive, Intellivision, Colecovision, plus many many more controllers.

Yeah, G.I. Joe is awesome. I'm referring to the 3 ¾" Joes, not those silly Barbie sized Joes. G.I. Joe was THE toy for me when I was young, and I still enjoy keeping up my old Joe stuff. The cartoons are great too. Here's a few Joe links:
